Introduction

The Program of the Master’s Degree in Marine Ecology at CICESE was created in 1980 and it is the most recognized in the country in the field of marine sciences. It has had a high impact on the training of scientists who have transcended academically and professionally in this area of study, in the country and overseas. Our graduates have found employment and have excelled as researchers and teachers in higher education institutions (such as universities and research centers), as employees and officials of government agencies and as employees or entrepreneurs in the private sector.

The main objective of the program of this master is to train highly qualified individuals to contribute to the solution of environmental problems and to play a leading role in the advancement of scientific knowledge on various marine systems. We accomplish this by developing the students' observation, measurement and analytical skills within the scientific context, as well as training in the selection and application of appropriate methodologies, that are specific of the border region in which we are located to analyze and solve environmental problems.

Within the teaching and scientific activities of the master, the critical skills of our students are strengthened by discussing different trends of thought and relevant hypotheses in marine ecology, analyzing scientific texts, presenting seminars, participating in training study circle, and performing scientific research project culminating with a thesis, among other strategies.

The lines of research carried out by researchers associated with the Marine Ecology graduate are diverse, ranging from the molecular and cellular scale to the level of communities and ecosystems. Our research projects are including basic research that contributes to advancing the scientific basis of marine ecology, as well as applied research, more oriented at solving specific local, regional o national issues concerning the social, productive or governmental sectors.

Our main research areas are included in four lines in generation and application of knowledge:
1) Biological and fisheries oceanography,
2)Use and conservation of marine resources,
3) Global change and biogeochemical processes and
4) Coastal ecosystems.

We also promote interaction with other aspects of marine science through other postgraduate offered in CICESE. The curriculum of our graduate includes mandatory and optional courses or the students of the master, while courses taken by students of the doctoral program are set according to their research interests.
