Project: El Origen del Volcanismo Monogenético y Poligenético
Responsable: Edgardo  Cañón  Tapia
Tipo de proyecto: Proyecto Conacyt
Resumen: Project Summary
One of the outstanding goals of modern volcanology is to explain the mechanism of formation of monogenetic vs polygenetic volcanism. The models proposed to date consider that the difference between activity types is mainly due to regional differences in the rate of magma production and the associated thermal effects. The influence of lithospheric stresses has also been suggested as a parameter controlling the type of volcanic activity at a regional scale. The geological application of these models, however, remains a matter of debate. Other factors not commonly considered involve some of the characteristics of the uderlying region of partial melt. The present project will assess the role played by each of these vsriables in controlling the style of volcanism in two target regions.

General Objective
This project aims to achieve a better understanding of the parameters that influence the formation of monogentic volcanoes and to identify the cases in which this type of activity takes place instead of the occurrence of polygenetic volcanism.
