This department studies the marine medium like a physical system. A very complex system which responds to direct sun’s and moon’s forcing through surface manifestation. Once the water sets in motion, the topography and Earth’s rotation affect its trajectory and give as result movements that vary spatially from a few microns, to global scales, and temporal variation from a few seconds to several years. Studies are made so that we can understand the dynamics of these movements in general covering great part of the temporal-spatial spectrum.

The Department’s mission is to investigate the ocean’s physics in general, and the Mexican seas in particular through projects directly developed by its academic personnel as well of human resources generated through its academic activities and thesis at all-three levels: undergraduate, M.Sc. and Ph.D.
